PCOS And Me: Learning To Listen To My Body

Table of Contents

When I first heard the words “You have PCOS,” it felt like a mix of relief, confusion and fear. Relief because I finally had an answer to years of irregular cycles, unexplained weight changes, and frustrating acne. Confusion because I had no idea what it actually meant, or where to go from there, and fear because the online space is filled with scary information, most of which was inaccurate.

Looking back, I wish someone had told me that this diagnosis wasn’t just about my ovaries or a condition to “fix.” PCOS is a window into how my body works, a signal to pay closer attention to its needs. Here’s what I’ve learned through trial, error, and self-discovery.

Your Symptoms Are Valid, Even If They Don’t Fit the Textbook

The thing about PCOS is that it doesn’t look the same for everyone. Some women struggle with hair loss, while others deal with hirsutism (hair growth in places we don’t want hair, like our chin and upper lip). Some can’t seem to lose weight no matter how hard they try, while others are lean and still face hormonal imbalances.

It’s easy to feel like your experience isn’t “bad enough” or “typical enough” to count. But your symptoms, and your feelings, are valid. Learning to honor my experience, instead of comparing it to others, was the first step in taking control of my health.

It’s Not About Perfection, It’s About Balance

I used to think managing PCOS meant I had to overhaul my entire life overnight: cut out carbs, never miss a workout, and somehow keep my stress in check while juggling work, family, and everything in between.

The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. It’s about finding small, sustainable habits that make you feel better. Maybe that’s swapping out sugary snacks for high-protein options, prioritizing sleep, or incorporating gentle movement like yoga or walking. Consistency matters more than perfection.

Advocate for Yourself at the Doctor’s Office

PCOS often feels like an uphill battle, especially when you’re navigating the healthcare system. I’ve been brushed off, misdiagnosed, and even told that losing weight was the only solution. If I could go back, I’d remind myself that I have every right to ask questions, request specific tests, and seek a second opinion when something doesn’t feel right.

The right healthcare team, one that listens and supports your goals, makes all the difference.

Blood Sugar Is a Bigger Deal Than You Think

I never realized how closely PCOS and blood sugar are linked until I started paying attention to my diet. It’s not about cutting carbs completely, but about eating in a way that keeps your energy and hormones stable. Simple swaps like pairing carbs with protein or healthy fats, and eating regularly throughout the day, have helped me feel more in control of my symptoms. Choosing whole grains and complex carbohydrates is a great way to get those key nutrients, while supporting healthy blood sugar management.

Your Mental Health Deserves Care Too

PCOS isn’t just a physical condition, it takes a toll on your mind too. From body image struggles to the emotional rollercoaster of hormonal fluctuations, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Therapy, journaling, and even connecting with others who have PCOS have been game-changers for me. Remember, it’s okay to ask for help.

You Are So Much More Than Your Diagnosis

PCOS may be a part of your life, but it doesn’t define you. There’s no shame in having this condition, and you don’t have to navigate it alone. Looking back, I wish I’d been kinder to myself, celebrated my wins (even the small ones), and trusted that progress is still progress.

If you’ve just been diagnosed with PCOS, take a deep breath. You’ve got this, and there’s a whole community here to support you.
