Receiving an HPV diagnosis from your healthcare provider can leave you feeling confused, frustrated, and overwhelmed. Many women are told that the next step is to “watch and wait,” with repeat Pap testing or HPV screening months or even years later. While this approach is appropriate from a medical surveillance standpoint because many HPV infections resolve spontaneously, it can leave patients wondering whether there is anything they can do to support their health in the meantime.¹⁻³

The truth is that human papillomavirus (HPV) is incredibly common. Approximately 80% of sexually active people will acquire an HPV infection at some point during their lifetime.¹ High-risk HPV types are responsible for nearly all cases of cervical cancer, as well as a substantial proportion of anal, vaginal, vulvar, penile, and oropharyngeal cancers.²,³ Fortunately, most HPV infections are cleared naturally by the immune system within one to two years and never progress to cancer.¹,²

Each year, however, millions of women receive abnormal cervical screening results, and many are diagnosed with cervical dysplasia or persistent HPV infection.¹,³ While regular screening and appropriate medical follow-up remain essential, growing research suggests that factors such as immune function, nutrition, oxidative stress, inflammation, metabolic health, and the vaginal microbiome may also influence whether HPV persists or is cleared.⁴⁻⁹

High-risk HPV produces viral proteins known as E6 and E7, which interfere with normal cellular regulation. These proteins contribute to oxidative stress, alter immune signalling, and disrupt the body’s normal ability to repair damaged DNA.²²⁻²⁵ Over time, these changes may increase the likelihood that HPV persists rather than being cleared by the immune system.

Oxidative stress occurs when the production of reactive oxygen species exceeds the body’s antioxidant capacity. Research has found higher markers of oxidative stress in women with persistent HPV infection and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia compared with healthy controls.²¹,²³

Lifestyle habits that may help support a healthy inflammatory response include:

  • Eating an antioxidant-rich diet with plenty of colourful fruits and vegetables
  • Including healthy fats such as olive oil, nuts, seeds, and omega-3-rich fish
  • Exercising regularly
  • Prioritizing restorative sleep
  • Managing chronic stress
  • Avoiding smoking, which is one of the strongest modifiable risk factors for persistent HPV infection and cervical cancer.²⁶

Although these strategies cannot eliminate HPV, they support overall immune health and may help create an environment that is more favourable for viral clearance.

3. Consider the Vaginal Microbiome

The vagina is home to a complex community of microorganisms known as the vaginal microbiome. In healthy reproductive-aged women, this ecosystem is typically dominated by Lactobacillus species, which help maintain an acidic vaginal pH and produce compounds that inhibit the growth of potentially harmful bacteria and viruses.²⁷⁻²⁹

Over the past decade, research has shown that the vaginal microbiome may play an important role in HPV persistence and cervical health. Women whose vaginal microbiome is dominated by Lactobacillus species appear to be more likely to clear HPV infections, while those with reduced Lactobacillus and greater microbial diversity are more likely to experience persistent HPV infection and cervical dysplasia.³⁰⁻³⁴

Although researchers are still working to better understand this relationship, Lactobacillus species are thought to support cervical health by:

  • Maintaining an acidic vaginal environment
  • Strengthening the cervical epithelial barrier
  • Producing antimicrobial compounds
  • Helping regulate local immune responses
  • Reducing inflammation within the cervical environment²⁸,³⁰,³¹

Because HPV infects the cells lining the cervix, maintaining a healthy vaginal environment may be one factor that supports the body’s natural ability to clear the virus.

Stress and the Vaginal Microbiome

Lycopene

Foods rich in lycopene include:

Interestingly, cooked tomato products provide more bioavailable lycopene than raw tomatoes.⁵⁷

Green Tea

Green tea contains polyphenols known as catechins, particularly epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Laboratory and small clinical studies have investigated green tea extracts for cervical dysplasia and HPV-related lesions, with some showing encouraging results. However, larger randomized controlled trials are still needed.⁵⁸⁻⁶¹

Can HPV go away on its own?
