New Study Finds AHCC Supplementation Clears High-Risk HPV Infections
Victoria Gasparini
The incidence of HPV is rising rapidly, with an estimated 79 million Americans infected with the virus and nearly 80% of the population expected to have a strain of HPV in their lifetime. With over 100 strains identified in humans, about 15 of them are considered high risk and are associated with many cancers such as cervical, oropharyngeal and anal. While vaccination has been successful in preventing many cases of HPV, it is not an effective treatment for those who already have the infection.
What we currently know is that having high risk HPV alone is just one factor that puts us at risk for the development of cancer. It is important to emphasize that HPV is just one contributing factor, as the risk of cancer development occurs in combination with other factors such as smoking, stress, immune dysfunction and inadequate nutrition.
Because of the lack of available treatment options for HPV, our approach at Papillex is to provide research-backed products to help with symptom-management and immune health, while providing you with the latest research on dietary and lifestyle medicine to help you feel your best while managing HPV.
With new research emerging, we are excited to announce a brand new study on the use of AHCC in the clearance of HPV. AHCC is one of the most thoroughly researched nutraceuticals for immune health, and has been widely used by traditional health practitioners for centuries in the clearance of many viral infections like the common cold, flu’s and even HPV. Before we discuss the results of the study, here’s a quick background about AHCC.
What is AHCC
AHCC® stands for active hexose correlated compound, a nutritional supplement derived from the medicinal mushroom, shiitake. After being used for many years in Traditional Chinese Medicine and medical practices in countries like Japan, AHCC® is recently being adopted globally for its immune-modulating activities. Several clinical research studies have found the compound to be effective as both a therapeutic and preventative immune support.
How Does AHCC Clear HPV?
In a brand new randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study, of women over the age of 30 with persistent high-risk HPV who took AHCC once daily for 6 months (followed by 6 months of placebo) found that nearly 64% of women in the study were HPV negative after just 6 months of treatment, whereas in the placebo group, only about 10% were HPV negative after 12 months.
This groundbreaking study concludes that AHCC is an effective way to support the immune system for the clearance of high-risk HPV infections and was extremely well-tolerated with no significant side-effects reported.
It is believed that AHCC helps to suppress cytokine IFN-beta to less than 20pg/ml which results in the clearance of HPV in patients.
AHCC Dosage for HPV
The dose in the study was 3g daily, while other studies have found benefits for cancer patients at 3-6g daily.
Two clinical trials have shown that even just 1g of AHCC is effective, but that 3g was slightly more affectatious in clearing HPV as well as providing adequate immune support.
At papillex, our AHCC comes in 500mg capsules and should be taken on an empty stomach, 30 minutes before eating, which will help increase the absorption of the compound into the bloodstream.
What if I already take Papillex?
You can add AHCC to your Papillex routine. While Papillex is a wonderful way to correct nutritional deficiencies associated with HPV, AHCC is a powerful immune-modulating compound that provides additional support in helping to clear viral infections.
Is AHCC right for you?
Despite the incredible safety profile for AHCC, we are unique individuals. We always recommend chatting with your health provider before starting a supplement routine. Naturopathic doctors and functional medicine practitioners are more thoroughly trained in the use of nutritional and herbal medicine and may be able to better answer your questions about supplementation.

HPV is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections, affecting 80% of sexually active women. In fact, most sexually active men and women will contract some strain of HPV at some point in their lives. Unlike many STI’s, HPV does not have a known cure. Because of this, the typical advice around sexual abstinence with sexually transmitted infections is likely not sustainable.
If you’ve tested positive for HPV, the best thing you can do for both you and your sexual partners health is educate yourself on safe sex, while addressing the infection and practicing methods to reduce viral transmission. With that being said, here are 3 tips you can take to practice safer sex with HPV, and reduce your risk of spread.
Talk to your doctor about getting vaccinated against HPV.
Both you and your partner may benefit from the protection of vaccination. The HPV vaccine prevents from many dominant strains of the virus, which reduces your risk of commonly associated cancers like cervical, anal, and oropharyngeal. The HPV vaccine also protects against occurrence of genital warts. Vaccination is NOT a substitute for regular screening, and therefore all people with a cervix need to keep up with their regular pap tests. Vaccination is a personal decision that should be discussed with your healthcare provider.
Use protection each time you engage in sexual activity
Keep in mind, HPV can be spread through any kind of sexual activity including vaginal, anal and oral sex. Though not 100% effective at stopping the spread of STD’s, condoms and dental dams can drastically reduce your risk of spreading HPV to your partner when engaging in sexual activity. It is important to know that HPV spreads through skin cells, so condoms do not provide complete protection.
Get tested. Regularly.
Early detection of HPV and any other STI’s is crucial to your health. Both you and your partner(s) should consider getting tested and staying in the know on your sexual health. Consider getting tested with each new sexual partner, as well as maintaining regular screening as recommended by your physician. A pap smear can help identify pre-cancerous and other cell changes of the cervix that may put you at risk for cervical cancer. The HPV test identifies the virus that can be responsible for these cell changes. Discuss your testing options with your physician.
Manage HPV with lifestyle and dietary changes
If you have chronically occurring genital warts, bumps, lesions or sores, you should check with your doctor before engaging in sexual activity. Though these often go away on their own, your doctor may be able to provide you with some options to speed recovery. There are also many dietary and lifestyle changes that can help clear or suppress the virus, making it less likely to spread infection through sexual activity. In addition to these changes, products like Papillex, AHCC and our new supplement for HSV, Simplix, may speed up the healing process.
In addition to common prevention methods, foundational lifestyle approaches like adequate sleep hygiene, a reduction in stress, and adding antioxidants through food and supplementation are tried and true ways to suppress HPV.

Agaricus Mushroom for Herpes and Cold sores
Jenny Henderson
It is very possible that you may have been hearing more lately about the benefits of medicinal mushrooms. The amount of research that has been devoted to the health effects of various mushrooms in recent years as exploded. There is already a fair body of evidence that demonstrates the power of mushrooms in benefiting the immune system, fighting cancer, reducing inflammation, supplying antioxidants, and fighting viruses, such as herpes and cold sores.
One of these mushrooms is a bit newer to the research scene than some of the veteran mushrooms like Reishi. We’re talking about Agaricus subrufescence (aka Agaricus blazei). Found in Brazil, this mushroom has long been used in globally for a variety of ailments, and is quite popular in Japan.
What kind of research does Agaricus have?
A lot of the research into this mushroom has focused on tumours and cancers, both in vitro as well as a some clinical trials. It appears that the extracts of Agaricus blazei have the ability to modulate the immune system to attack cancer cells, and to have direct anti-tumor effects (like inhibiting tumor growth).
Clinical trials have also looked into the anti-inflammatory effects of Agaricus, in both healthy people, and those with inflammatory conditions like IBD.
Traditional uses of Agaricus have often focused around reducing cholesterol, atherosclerosis, and liver ailments. Liver protection had been shown in studies, as well as benefits against diabetes, and viral infections.
What about the herpes and cold sores virus?
It appears that Agaricus possesses anti-herpetic activity, meaning that it can act against the Herpes Simplex virus that causes cold sores and genital herpes. Laboratory studies have looked into how exactly it acts on the virus and found that generally the mushroom extracts bind with the virus and interfere with its ability to attach and enter healthy cells.
What gives it these properties?
There is a type compound found within Agaricus (as well as other medicinal mushrooms and marine algae) called polysaccharides. These varied and complex molecular chains all seem to have very beneficial functions, including anti-viral activity. They do not kill viruses, but they stimulate the immune system to target the invaders, as well as interfere with the virus itself, making it hard for them to enter cells and replicate. The most effective group of polysaccharides are called sulfated polysaccharides, because they have some sulfate groups attached to the chains. It is this sulfation that makes these compounds especially anti-viral, and potentially beneficial against herpes and cold sores.
Is Agaricus safe?
Agaricus subrufescence as an edible mushroom has an excellent safety profile and is generally considered safe to consume. Extracts of this mushrooms also are generally considered safe, with very few reports of adverse events. Of course, as always, we recommend that you speak to a qualified health care practitioner before starting a new medicinal supplement.

As we’ve increased our understanding of the health benefits of mushrooms, the market for mushroom supplement products has increased as well.
One potent mushroom called AHCC, found to be effective in supporting HPV eradication, has seen a boom in interest and availability. Several retailers are now selling AHCC covering a wide range of quality and price points.
As a consumer, we understand it can be confusing to know what AHCC you should buy. How do you know which AHCC is best and what is the difference between the products?
Here is a simple guide to purchasing AHCC.
What is AHCC?
AHCC stands for Active Hexose Correlated Compound, a highly-researched mushroom extract derived from the shiitake mushroom species.
Over 30 clinical research studies have supported the use, effectiveness, and safety profile of AHCC®. The medicinal mushroom extract has been found to have powerful anti-viral activity against HPV as well as other viruses like influenza. It has been researched as an adjunct in cancer treatment.
The compound works by stimulating the production of immune molecules that play a role in responding to infections and tumor growth. Studies show that it can increase the number of readily available natural killer cells, dendritic cells, and cytokines. The gentle and modulating action of mushrooms also makes them general immune supports to promote overall wellbeing.
Where does AHCC come from?
The compound was created by a Japanese company called Amino Up Chemical Co. Amino Up was founded in the 1970’s, they have since been manufacturing innovative nutritional compounds. In 1989 the company debuted the Lentinula Edodes Extract, also called AHCC.
The magic in these mushrooms comes down to their unique manufacturing process. No other mushroom extract is processed in the same way as Amino Up.
The company uses an extensive screening process to extract the special strain of mycelia used in AHCC. Mycelia are the part of the mushroom that grows below ground. They look like root-like hairs that grow on wood or soil. Once harvested, the roots are taken to the manufacturing plant to be broken down into tiny molecules. Through cultivation, sterilization, and decomposition, the compound is concentrated and freeze-dried. The final extract is made into a powder or capsule form. Throughout the process, the company ensures the safety and efficacy of every batch.
Make sure it is the real thing
Look out, some retailers are not selling the real AHCC.
Instead of selling the proprietary extract from Amino Up, some retailers have packaged mushroom blends or other forms of shiitake mushroom. You will know the difference if the product is labeled Active Hexose Correlated Compound or AHCC with a registered ® or ™ label. Only AHCC that has been extracted from the Japanese manufacturers can be labeled with the registered trademark.
The problem with using the non-AHCC products is that their therapeutic ingredients are not what have been included in the clinical research on AHCC. So, you may save money on a more affordable product, but it likely won’t have the intended impact.
How has Papillex made our product more affordable?
You might note that other suppliers are selling AHCC for a higher price. If the product contains pure AHCC® and has a trademark symbol, it has come from the same manufacturer and is the same therapeutic product. The difference is only the branding and potentially some added ingredients. Check your labels and look for AHCC® proprietary blend, the dosage, and if they have added other ingredients or fillers.
At Papillex, our goal has always been impact over profit. We wanted to make AHCC as accessible as possible, which is why we lowered our profit margins. We decided to sell AHCC® for $53, instead of over $100.
AHCC® by Papillex
Our AHCC product contains 60 capsules of 500 mg of pure AHCC per capsule. We add nothing else, no fillers, additives, or preservatives. Ingredient quality is top on our priority list and our products are verified with a certificate of analysis, including microbial testing, heavy metal testing, physical testing, and ingredient identification testing. So, you can be confident in what you’re taking.
We added AHCC to our HPV toolbox to optimize your body’s ability to respond to HPV naturally. Our Papillex™ product aims to optimize nutrient levels found to be low in individuals with HPV infections. It also supplies immune-boosting ingredients to support the immune system. Taking AHCC® alongside Papillex™ creates a synergistic effect. Taking the two together offers more support than either of them taken alone.
How to Dose
AHCC®: The clinically researched dosage of AHCC for HPV is 1-3grams per day. (3 x 500 mg capsules taken twice daily) for 6 months.
Papillex™: For acute infections, we recommend 2 capsules twice daily. For maintenance reduce dosage to 2 capsules daily.

Papillex™and AHCC®, Which One Should You Take?
Adrienne Hill-Strathy
Supplementation can be confusing.
If you have been diagnosed with HPV, you might be wondering, is there a supplement you can take? How much and when should you take it? And how do you know if it is working?
The good news, you can supplement to support your immune system to defend against HPV. Recommended supplements and dosages will depend on the supplement and the person’s specific needs.
Papillex has formulated two nutritional supplements based on the current evidence-based research on HPV. Our products are formulated with nutrients known to be associated with HPV infections and have been evaluated to support the immune response against viral infections like HPV.
In this blog, we spill the beans on our supplements to help you decide which would be best for you.
What to know about Papillex™
Papillex™ is a nutritional supplement and immune support that was designed to correct nutrient deficiencies commonly found in individuals with HPV.
The supplement contains beta carotene, vitamin E, vitamin C, folate, selenium, and indole-3-carbinol. These nutrients have been consistently found to be low in individuals with persistent HPV infections. Moreover, increased levels have been associated with improvements in HPV through powerful antioxidant capabilities and inhibiting cancer cell growth.
Papillex™ also contains immune-modulating compounds like astragalus, reishi, and green tea extract. The research on these compounds shows powerful anti-viral properties that stimulate the immune system to eradicate infections.
Together, the supplement offers well-rounded nutrient and immune support.
The micronutrients found in Papillex™ can help support general health in most individuals. The supplement might be right for you if your diet is low in fruits in vegetables, you have difficulty absorbing foods into your diet, or you have high levels of stress. Papillex™ is not recommended in pregnancy due to its Vitamin A concentration, which can be toxic in fetal development.
Dosage: If you are HPV positive and/or have cervical dysplasia take two capsules twice daily. Once in the morning and once in the afternoon 2-3 hours away from food. As dysplasia improves and HPV is eradicated, you can decrease the dosage to 2 capsules once a day for maintenance and general immune support.
What to know about AHCC®
AHCC® is new to the Papillex toolbox.
The product was launched in 2020 following research studies supporting its use in eradicating high-risk HPV infections. The supplement contains a mushroom extract derived from the shiitake mushroom. The extract is one of a kind and only manufactured by one company out of Japan, Amino Up Chemical Co.
AHCC® acts on the immune system by stimulating molecules like cytokines, NK cells, and dendritic cells. These molecules help support a healthy immune response against viral invaders.
We are only starting to research and understand the variety of uses of AHCC®. The compound has been researched for its use in eradicating viral infections, including HPV. In a randomized control trial participants taking AHCC® for 3-6 months had a 66.7% clearance rate of high-risk HPV infection. In contrast, in the general population, the expected clearance rate of HR-HPV is around 0-10%.
AHCC® is well tolerated in most individuals and supports general health. Because AHCC is a strong immune stimulant, it may be too stimulating for individuals with autoimmune conditions. The supplement may be right for you if you are prone to colds and flu and frequent infection.
Dosage: If you have an active HPV infection and signs of cervical dysplasia, take 2 capsules twice daily, away from food. Continue this for 3-6 months. Reduced the dosage to 2 capsules daily for another 3-6 months. AHCC® has not been studied for use for over one year.
Before purchasing AHCC make sure the product has a registered TM or R sign next to its name. Products sold without this label as not sourced from the real AHCC source and do not include the compounds evaluated in clinical research trials.
The power couple
You can also supplement AHCC® and Papillex™ together for extra support. The duo provides both micronutrient and added immune support against HPV.
How do I know if it’s working?
It isn’t always easy to know if your supplements are effective.
Herbal and nutritional supplements act slow and gently. It can take time and consistent use to have an impact. Making it difficult to know if they have made any difference. We recommend keeping track of basic indicators like energy levels, the number of days sick, level of dysplasia found on Pap testing, and HPV positivity to see how your supplementation is working for you!

Amino Up Chemical Co.: The Makers of AHCC®
Adrienne Hill-Strathy
When it comes to medicinal mushrooms, there isn’t one quite like AHCC®.
AHCC® stands for Active Hexose Correlated Compound, a unique mushroom extract cultured from the shiitake mushroom species.
Medicinal mushrooms have been used for centuries in Eastern Medicine to prevent and treat illness. These ancient practices are now being supported by clinical research studies, leading to growth in innovative products that optimize the compounds’ therapeutic benefits.
The Amino Up Chemical Co. has spurred innovation in the mushroom world by creating an extract with potent immune-modulating activities.
But first, how are mushrooms medicinal?
Before we dive into AHCC® - let’s start with the basics. How can mushrooms be medicinal?
We are all familiar with the common white mushrooms, portobello, and oyster mushrooms, but most of us reserve them for our forks, not our medicine cabinets.
Out of 14,000 species of fleshy fungi, numerous types have been found to have nutritional and therapeutic effects.
Edible mushrooms contain beneficial nutritional compounds such as B vitamins, zinc, potassium, copper, and magnesium. Mushrooms are also a great source of fiber and can protect against cellular damage due to their concentration of antioxidants.
Medicinal mushrooms contain compounds that support bodily functions that protect against aging and disease. The medicinal mushrooms are not always edible and require advanced techniques to extract the desired medicinal component so that they can be uptaken by the body.
Amino Up Chemical Co.
The AHCC® compound is manufactured by a company called Amino Up Chemical Co. in Sapporo, Japan. Amino Up has been manufacturing innovative functional ingredients powered by plants since the 1970s. In 1989 the company debuted the cultured Lentinula Edodes Extract, also known as AHCC®.
Today, over 30 clinical trials have investigated the use of Amino Up’s AHCC® in response to viral infections and cancers through its immune-modulating activity. Not only has the compound been found to be supportive in viral infections and influenza, but also a complementary therapy in breast, liver, pancreatic, and colon cancer. The findings provide evidence that AHCC® can improve quality of life and prolong survival.
How was AHCC® created?
AHCC® wouldn’t be the potent immune support that it is without the company's unique manufacturing process.
AHCC® was derived through an extensive screening and manufacturing process. The company screened a vast range of basidiomycetes mushrooms to extract the specialty strain of mycelia used to produce AHCC®.
How is AHCC extracted?
AHCC® is derived from a mixture of components derived from the cultured mycelia. Mycelia are root-like hairs of the mushroom that grow in wood or soil. AHCC® is derived from mycelia of the Lentinula edodes mushroom, also known as shiitake mushroom. These root-like hairs are broken down into tiny molecules. The final product is taken in capsule or powdered form.
Not all supplements are created equal. The source, quality, and effectiveness of a supplement are all important when we are talking about our health. Amino Up uses a standardized extract of the cultured Lentinula edodes mycelia to ensure the highest quality and product consistency.
The process regularly undergoes quality and safety control. AHCC® is extracted with the environment in mind by regularly conducting studies into the biodiversity around its property. Amino Up aims to live in harmony with the environment and wildlife.
Why take AHCC®?
What makes the extract unique is its concentration of glucans. Normally, medicinal mushrooms contain polysaccharides called beta-glucans. Beta-glucans are known to modulate the immune system and can trigger immune molecules to amplify a response.
The cultured extraction process of AHCC® derives another glucan called acylated alpha- 1,4 glucans. These glucans have a very small molecular weight, about 95% smaller than beta-glucan. The lower molecular weight is easier for the digestive system to absorb, helping to directly impact the immune system.
Together this combination acts as immune-modulating agents, helping strengthen the defense against infections and chronic disease.
Look out for products that are not the real AHCC®
Clinical research evaluating the use of AHCC® has used this proprietary extract. These studies have researched AHCC® in cancer therapy, antivirals, and immune support.
AHCC® sold without the trademark (TM) or registered trademark (R) symbol next to the “AHCC” is not the clinically researched form of AHCC.
Some supplement companies will use the full name – Active Hexose Correlated Compound. This implies that the compound has not been verified by the current clinical research and does not contain the acetylated alpha-glucans found to have an immune-modulating effect.
There is always shroom to grow
We are excited by the ever-evolving ways we are learning to use plants and fungi as medicine. As the research unfolds, so too will our application and development of products like AHCC® to help promote longevity and health.
As always, we recommend consulting with a natural health practitioner before supplementing AHCC®. The compound is safe and effective in most individuals, but it is always good to check if it is the right choice for you.

Genital Warts are one symptom of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). Warts are caused by specific strains of the HPV family. These strains cause soft, fleshy, and often irritating growths around the genital areas.
If you have developed genital warts, you are probably wondering, “how do I get rid of them?” and “what does this mean for my health?”
In this blog, we break down all things genital warts, as well as provide information about a new medicinal mushroom compound called AHCC®. AHCC® has been found to support the immune system and eradicate viral infections like HPV.
What are Genital Warts?
Genital warts usually appear on the vulva, vagina, scrotum, or penis a few weeks to two to three months after exposure to an HPV infection.
The warts tend to be soft, fleshy, skin-colored, or appear as white bumps. They may grow in singles or multiples, sometimes appearing as a cauliflower-like growth. While genital warts can be itchy, annoying, and persistent, they are harmless.
How Did I Contract Genital Warts?
The HPV family includes over 100 different viruses that commonly infect humans. The virus is so common because it is easily transmitted through skin-to-skin contact.
Genital warts can be transmitted through sexual interaction with the vagina, anus, oral sex, or hand contact. Transmission can even occur through individuals without visible warts or symptoms.
Given the ease of transmission, it is estimated that 80 percent of people will be exposed to an HPV infection at some point in their lifetime. The risk of developing complications depends on the viral strain of HPV that you have contracted.
What are the complications of contracting genital warts?
Fortunately, the strains of HPV that cause genital warts do not cause cancer. The strains of HPV associated with warts are considered low-risk. HPV tends to arise two to three months after infection and can last anywhere from a few weeks to a few years.
High-risk strains that are often asymptomatic can eventually progress into cancer.
It is important to note that contracting one strain of HPV does not make you immune to contracting other strains of HPV. Even if you have low-risk HPV, you can still be exposed to high-risk strains and should follow your physicians’ recommendations and receive regular testing. You can also pass the infection on to another person even once the warts have gone away.
Can genital warts be treated?
If you have recently noticed an outbreak of genital warts - what can you do to get rid of them?
HPV and genital warts can be treated.
Viruses and other pathogens that affect humans are suppressed by the immune system. Immune molecules such as natural killer cells, cytokines, and macrophages play a role in identifying and eliminating these foreign invaders. One way to naturally enhance the function and production of the immune system is through medicinal mushrooms.
AHCC® and genital warts
Active hexose correlated compound, or AHCC®, is a medicinal mushroom extract with immune-modulating and antioxidant activities. AHCC® has been researched for its use in supporting immune function in cancer treatment, viral infections, and enhancing immune function.
Studies have found AHCC® to increase the natural killer cell and cytokine production, allowing for greater activation of the immune system. AHCC® also enhances T-cell and macrophage production, helping eradicate and eliminate invaders.
AHCC® has been clinically researched as immune support for people suffering from persistent high-risk HPV infections. Dr. Judith A. Smith, of the University of Texas, has led two clinical trials of the use of AHCC® in people with HPV. The studies have evaluated a dose of 1 and 3 grams of AHCC® daily in high-risk HPV-infected individuals. The results of both studies have found AHCC® to have statistical significance in eradicating HPV infections compared to placebo.
No research studies have specifically evaluated AHCC® on genital warts. However, the underlying immune system support is important for clearing viral infections because it is the first to respond to and identify threats to the body for elimination.
What else can I do?
There are certain lifestyle changes you can make to reduce your risk of infection:
Quit Smoking and reduce alcohol: Smoking cigarettes impacts nearly every tissue in the body. No safe limit is recommended for use.
Reduce alcohol intake: Drinking alcohol can suppress the immune system. If you choose to drink, aim for less than 2-3 glasses per week.
Long-term use of oral contraceptives: Oral contraceptives have been linked to an increased risk of cervical cancer.
Amp up your diet: Eating a nutrient-dense diet full of fruits and vegetables. Individuals who consumed more vegetables are less likely to have HPV.
Green tea extract: Green tea extract has also been shown to inhibit the development of HPV warts and cervical lesions.

How To Supplement AHCC® for HPV
Adrienne Hill-Strathy
Natural health products are growing in popularity, likely due to their generally strong safety profiles and wide-ranging impact on the body.
Before starting any supplement, it is important to know if it’s right for you.
AHCC® is a powerful immune support derived from medicinal mushrooms. Papillex has recently added AHCC® to our HPV arsenal and wanted to lay out everything you should know before jumping on this supplement train!
What is AHCC®?
AHCC® stands for active hexose correlated compound, a nutritional supplement derived from the medicinal mushroom, shiitake. After being used for many years in Traditional Chinese Medicine and medical practices in countries like Japan, AHCC® is recently being adopted globally for its immune-modulating activities. Several clinical research studies have found the compound to be effective as both a therapeutic and preventative immune support.
Interested in learning more? We have laid out everything you need to know about supplementing AHCC® so you can decide if it’s right for you.
Is AHCC® safe?
One of the magical things about medicinal mushrooms is that they are generally safe and well-tolerated in most individuals when taken in the appropriate dose. AHCC® has been tested in individuals in dosages up to 9 grams. Overall, findings have shown AHCC® to be safe with only some reports of mild nausea, headaches, and diarrhea.
AHCC® has also been found to be well-tolerated alongside other medications, including being used as an adjunctive in chemotherapy. It is important to note that the compound may interfere with drugs metabolized using the CYP450 2D6 pathways and should not be combined with drugs such as doxorubicin or ondansetron.
Despite the compound’s strong safety record, there is still a lot to learn about the fungi. Research has mostly evaluated the use of AHCC® in patients with cancer, influenza, and viral infections. The compounds’ immune-boosting properties could potentially be too stimulating in individuals with immune-related disorders such as MS, Lupus, rheumatoid arthritis that present with immune activation.
AHCC® Dosage for HPV
Typically, a dose of 1-3 grams of AHCC® is recommended for general immune support in patients with HPV. Higher doses of 3-6 grams daily are typically used in cancer patients.
Two clinical trials, conducted by Dr. Judith A. Smith, have specifically evaluated the use of AHCC® in individuals with persistent high-risk HPV infections. The first study included ten female participants, using a dose of 3 grams daily for 5 weeks up until 6 months. The second study included another ten females but used a dose of 1 gram daily. Both groups found AHCC® to be more effective than controls at eliminating the infection, however, the 3-gram dose was slightly more effective.
How to take AHCC®?
AHCC® by Papillex comes in pills of 500mg. For general use, we recommend taking 2 capsules in the morning at least 30 minutes before eating.
Why take AHCC® on an empty stomach?
We recommend taking AHCC® without food because most clinical studies have evaluated AHCC® on an empty stomach. We also know that taking some supplements away from food can help increase the absorption of the compound into the bloodstream, ensuring optimal therapeutic effect. However, some patients may experience nausea or have difficulty taking supplements without food. In which case, taking AHCC® with a light meal or a small amount of food will still allow for absorption.
Consistency is important for the compound to have its intended effect. It can be helpful to set a designated time to take your supplements. It can also help to pair it with another daily activity, like when you brush your teeth in the morning. Setting an alarm or having your supplements in a visible, easily accessible space can also be helpful for maintaining consistency.
Can I take AHCC® together with Papillex™?
AHCC® and Papillex™ can be taken together for added immune support. Papillex™ helps restore nutrient deficiencies that may be low in individuals with HPV. Papillex™ also contains immune-supportive herbs like astragalus and reishi. AHCC® is a powerful immune support, providing additional support in helping identify and clear viral infections.
Duration - How long do I need to be on this supplement?
AHCC® can be taken as a daily supplement in lower dosages of 1 gram per day to help support general immune function. For higher dosing of 3-6 grams, it is recommended to only supplement for 3-6 months. After 3-6 months, you can reduce the dose to 1-3 grams daily. Research studies have not evaluated the long-term use of AHCC®, therefore we cannot say whether it is safe to take for years on years.
How do you find out more and if it’s right for you?
Despite the compound’s strong safety profile, we are all unique individuals.
We recommend consulting a healthcare professional before supplementing AHCC®. Naturopathic doctors, Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners, and Functional Medicine doctors are often more informed about nutritional and herbal supplements and may be more suited to answer your questions about AHCC® and whether it is right for you.
